  Just a cultural warning that we have to be a bit careful here:

  Most would say "well, there is this thing called the International
Reference Ionosphere (IRI); that can tell you everything you need to know
about the ionosphere and you can calculate the F2 MUF, etc.".  Those on
this list, e.g. Carl, know that reality is very different at times from a
monthly mean type of climatology that forms the basis of IRI.  The global
amateur radio data can get a unique and better view - but one doesn't want
to touch off a "right vs. wrong" type discussion.  I've seen it happen
before.

  What we could do instead is to say "IRI is fine.. for long term averages,
as far as it goes - but we now have a new, empirically determined, way to
capture some of the more short term space weather variability.  It
complements IRI, not replaces it."  Just something to remember.
