  Just a cultural warning that we have to be a bit careful here:

I have an ulterior motive on the path-specific F2 MUF.  If there was a global model accepted as standard (even with known flaws) and that could be queried in real time, it would be possible to have a degree-of-difficulty assigned to a particular QSO between stations - sort of like distance-based scoring but with a "technical merit" bonus.  (I can just see a team of lab-coated researchers holding up their scoring cards...)


  Most would say "well, there is this thing called the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI); that can tell you everything you need to know about the ionosphere and you can calculate the F2 MUF, etc.".  Those on this list, e.g. Carl, know that reality is very different at times from a monthly mean type of climatology that forms the basis of IRI.  The global amateur radio data can get a unique and better view - but one doesn't want to touch off a "right vs. wrong" type discussion.  I've seen it happen before.

  What we could do instead is to say "IRI is fine.. for long term averages, as far as it goes - but we now have a new, empirically determined, way to capture some of the more short term space weather variability.  It complements IRI, not replaces it."  Just something to remember.
