Forwarding naturally sorts out the various channels stations are heard
on for mail purposes.
But if your use the "heard" lists for CONNECT activity sorting out
channel requires some mental gymnastics with clock time.

The best-fit solution might be a blend?
For system management, perhaps all the ">>" should go into
logs/bandlog.txt without truncation.
For user purposes then, "tail -200 logs/bandlog.txt >
public/heard_history.txt".
That provides the JHEARD for on-channel, DOWNLOAD for the past day(?),
plus an administrative switch history log.
And your patch removes the need to lose other useful information.
Plus, rather than a restart, add FLUSH into the process of channel
switching.
It remains an interesting scripting exercise...
