[aprssig] messaging systems

I remember that a D700 with the voice module could actually speak out a
message if it was formatted properly.  Actually, I think it mostly spelled
callsigns but did have some key words too.

I assume any kenwood APRS radio with the voice module can do this.  I’m
asking this on the APRSSIG to see if anyone remembers.

And the Byonics.com Tiny trakers support the OUT Message command for
remotely turning on and off bits via APRS message.  Probably others do as
well.

Could a received APRS message (with a certain key word) trigger an alarm on
most (or some) existing portable radios with ARPS on them?

Y4es, that is an ideal way to use APRS messaging.  But that example was
very verbose as you suggested.  APRS messages are much more reliable the
shorter they are.

I'm thinking of the "push" / "pull" problem so if it were guaranteed
delivery with APRS a one line message could be very useful in a case like
this:

"EMERGENCY please check your Winlink mail box ASAP u have a Message from
the Grant County Emergency Manager"

Or even shorter...

To prove the point of the "push / pull problem" I sent yesterday several
messages through Winlink (via telnet) to several people who I know are
registered and can use Winlink and have it installed on their computers. So
far no reponses...

APRS is messaging one line at a time.  Not multi-line.

But if you can get a complete concept in one line, then it is a great real
time messaging system.

I'm impressed !! Most people seem to be thinking about "cool" technology
and not about something that works reliably and universally. This morning I
sent the following graphic to a couple of hams, saying this is what "I want
to see". As background, I live in Grant County, Oregon (pop=7000) in John
Day, Oregon (pop=1700). It is mountainous and 3 hours to "anywhere". In the
below graphic Salem (in the third box) is our state capital and where the
state emergency management office is located.
