[aprssig] APRS Object creation WAS: APRS Symbol Look Up Table

HI Bob,

I commute and it is typically an hour plus ride. The information can be very useful!

When I used an older tablet (WebDT) connected to my TNC I would post accidents when it was convenient. This was typically while actually stopped in traffic or moving very slowly. I use APRSIS32 which allowed me to create an object at my location. After a bit of experimentation, I ended up creating a series of objects that I could turn on or off more conveniently. I only had to remember to kill the object although that wasn’t a big deal. For a time, I would get a text for accidents as well. When I could, I would move the object to the area of the accident, (e.g, Exit @ mile marker 32). This was not practical while moving for obvious safety reasons.

After replacing my WedDT with a Winbook 7 I realized this isn’t going to happen simply because the screen resolution is just too small to control with a fingertip.

Did anyone use the data? I’ll probably never know. However, I did see a few others pop up occasionally after I started.

While commuting, I run WAZE on my phone which keeps me updated to the road conditions (e.g., accidents). WAZE has an easy way to create “objects” that makes marking various things while driving. I create an “object” anytime I come upon them unless someone has already done so. Various object include; accident, object in road, road construction, etc. Operation is simple. There is a single button that brings up a “keypad” menu. From that menu, each item breaks into smaller choices. To create an accident object, the third press selects where the accident is located and the fourth sends the data. One of the beauties is that when the object is sent, it uses the location where the “create object” was first used. So if conditions don’t allow a quick completion, it still puts the object where it belongs. For a quick peek at some features check out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waze I use it every time I am in my vehicle. I like the situational awareness! For that reason I recommend it!

Something similar to the WAZE application would be sweet! As part of an existing APRS application seems to be best since that would wrap everything into a single application.

Best regards,

Fred N7FMH

Kenneth got me thinking.

I see some of the symbols are for weather-related conditions (rain, fog, mist, tornado, blowing snow, ...). I wonder if anyone actually uses them? By putting out objects? If so, it must take a lot of attention to the current conditions and a lot of time spent on the radio (or computer). The adage here is if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes!

In the interest of making it easier to look up symbol codes, I've made a lookup table which has the symbol code, the primary symbol, and the secondary symbol all on top of each other as opposed to the three adjacent tables on the aprs.org page: http://blog.thelifeofkenneth.com/2017/01/aprs-symbol-look-up-table.html

Thanks again to Hessu for curating the icon set used to generate this table.
