In TM-D710 there are two COMs. One in the body, one in the display unit, and of course another for GPS/WX in the display unit.

  One question I have is:

Does the head have some kind of RS-232 serial port connection on it so
that you could connect it to an external computer with APRS program as
you do in the D700/710 "packet " mode.

No
It would be nice if it did. As long as the main radio body had one
also.
Which of course the main body does but again the Head does not.

Let us hope we never witness the "Silence Of The Hams"

I'm really puzzled now. If the TNC is in the control head, and the 710 supports the same kind of "packet mode" operation as the 700 with an external computer/terminal, then there must be some way TNC data is getting to the main chassis where the serial port connector is located.

Is it interleaved in the data stream carrying radio control functions (volume, squelch, channel, etc.) from the head to the main chassis?

Or perhaps separate TTL-level signals in other conductors of the head-to-radio cable with conversion to true RS-232 levels inside the main chassis?
