Hi, Skip.
There really is no SSID "standard" that I am aware of. A number of years
ago, some folks in my state thought it was a good idea, but it never
got widely accepted nor used. To my knowledge, there is no national
"best practice" type thing, only occasional local convention.
The only caveat with using any old SSID is whether you are going through
a Net/Rom or KA Node that might invert your SSID. For example, when I go
into a node as KB9ALN, it comes out on the other end as KB9ALN-15. In
the same manner, KB9ALN-1 going in comes out as KB9ALN-14. You could
wind up with a situation where you would go in using a particular SSID
and come out with an SSID that is in use by you for another purpose.
That's a problem when you are using a lot of different SSIDs.
If a station wants to answer your connect request, your station and one
of your other stations using the same SSID would try answering at the
same time.
It is only in an unusual situation that would only happen once in a blue
moon, but it could happen.
Hope that helps, 73
