I acknowledged this several posts ago - that the D700 has flat TX audio. I brought this up over a decade ago on this list. This was at a time when almost everyone else was doing the mic/speaker/hardware TNC kludge, raising the issue of pre-emph/de-emph/no-emph compatibility.
My current observations are about soft TNC performance connected to the 6-pin mini-DIN “data” port, which does provide flat discriminator audio. I wouldn’t think of using a transceiver without this port for packet/SSTV/digimodes.
As it happens, during my extensive controlled shootout of hardware and software TNCs, I was surprised to find the software TNCS were barely affected by presence or lack of pre-emphasis on incoming signals.
