The problem is that different digipeater implementations behave
inconsistently.

With some, the used part of the digipeater path gives you an accurate
picture of where the packet has been retransmitted.

Other implementations appear to add extra hops.  That is what you are
seeing.   The digipeaters are creating an ambiguous situation where you
really can't tell what happened.
