and this was my point, I apologise that I may not have been clearer, with 
"soundmodems" they rely on the quality of the sound card that is being 
used.... as you just said yourself, "junk noisy motherboard based sound 
systems".

I agree an external sound card (usb) or a hardware one such as a sound 
blaster "card" and not those ones that still rely on the computer itself to 
do most of the process.

I have no idea.   All the soft-modems tested were Windows-based and link to 
the
Windows Direct-X 9.0 audio libraries.

By the way, the sound system used for these tests was a Griffin Electronics
"iMic" external USB-connected sound system that is far superior to the junk
noisy motherboard-based sound systems in most PCs.    Details on the iMic
