They are from the original TAPR Mic-E encoder device -- the decades-distant
forerunner of the TinyTrak, etc.

Like a TinyTrack, it was a transmit-only device. It was intended to be inserted
in series between a mic and the radio's mic jack -- hence the name "Mic
Encoder". . Unlike the TinyTrack, you could select one of 16 canned messages
in the field, with a 16-position rotary switch (the same canned messages that
show up in Kenwood APRS menus, or on the TinyTrak config menu) --AND-- you
could select several canned paths from a similar rotary switch. Details on
this now-discontinued historic device here:

<http://www.tapr.org/kits_mic-e.html>

Note that "Mic-E" actually has at least 3 meanings:

o The highly-compressed position data format that puts part of the posit
data in the destination field.

o The original TAPR hardware device that produced this kind of packet.

o The technique of APRS-packet-burst-on-unkey on a voice channel. [The
Mic-E data format was invented to make the shortest possible burst in this
APRS-after-voice mode.] Today, the TinyTrack and all the Kenwood APRS radios
support this mode of burst-on-unkey.
