Guys, thanks for the feedback - the Tiger idea is now in the round file.
(My interest in that had been that as a vector construct, these wd lend
themselves to high compression for storage purposes.)

A number of my users object to Google's TOU, and others require operation
sans internet connectivity. I'd like to find a mapping product/set that
will allow for a local-only, server-based operation.

What I'm looking for is a set of maps on cd's or any other compact medium,
zoom levels 8 to 14, with an API that will support icon and text placement.
Ideally, open source, but that may not be available at this writing.

While I really like the idea of OSM/OL - I've done some work with those with
good results - but a download of the tile set for my county took around 55
hours, with a 1-second wait between files in order to reduce hammering
them. Times like that can be a deal-breaker for some users.

I've been in contact with the mapquest people hoping that they had plans to
publish OSM tile sets on removeable/portable media, but, sadly, no.

I'm monitoring the OSM site for any developments surfacing there, but I'll
appreciate *any* suggestions that might meet the above constraints. Thanks
again, all.

AS
