I use the open-source "PDF Creator" which is an application wrapped around the
(also open-source) "GhostScript" clone of Adobe Postscript. I find it typically
produces PDFs that are about 10-20% smaller than the official Adobe Acrobat
Distiller. Get it here:

Dynamic web pages with complex layouts that would choke and crash the official
Adobe product (in my case it was the order confirmation page at newegg.com)
sail through PDF Creator just fine.

The combination of PDF Creator to produce PDFs and Foxit Reader to view them
yields a solution that consumes ONE TWENTIETH of the disk space of a full
version of the current Acrobat, loads vastly faster, is far more impervious to
the malware attacking and exploiting PDFs, and is FREE FREE FREE!
