[aprssig] Is WXSVR Permanently Defunct???

Pet Peeve Alert....

I really get mad when people say things like this. A computer program  
is the personal property of the author. He has, and should have,  
complete freedom to use it to provide a service, sell it, make it open  
source, or throw it in the trash.

Suppose you spend years building a beautiful sailboat, and once it is  
done you spend more years giving underprivileged kids sailing lessons.  
At some point you stop doing it. Maybe it is a health reason, maybe  
one of the parents yelled at you, maybe you can't afford the upkeep,  
or maybe you just don't like to sail any more. Does that mean you have  
some sort of obligation to allow others to take over the boat? Does it  
mean you have to explain your decision to stop doing something  
altruistic? Of course not.

Running a service for hams is a frustrating experience, to say the  
least. Maybe ten percent of users will take the time to thank you or  
to donate when you need it. Eighty-eight percent of hams use the  
service and appreciate it, but don't give a particular thought to the  
effort and expense behind it. The final two percent are the ones ruin  
it. You cannot please them, and they feel like you have some sort of  
obligation to bend to their wishes and needs. Dave Anderson, who was  
one of the brightest and most generous APRS sysops was driven out of  
APRS by that two percent. There are times when I get fed up, and I try  
to focus on the the 98%. One day it may not be enough...

Dale deserves nothing but the profuse thanks of all the ham operators  
who have benefited by his efforts over the years. He has no  
obligations to APRS, we have an obligation to him!
