So, do I understand correctly that with a GTRANS cable, it is NMEA
compatible a.k.a. standard PC serial interface compatible with appropriate
level conversion?   AND, if using a different connector pinout, it might be
compatible with ICOM???  Or does ICOM need a different version, the
GTRANS-KW?

The nuvi isn't directly NMEA compatible, but the GTRANS cable translates 
the protocol.  You can use the GTRANS-KW version (intended for the 
D700/D710) on some DSTAR radios by switching two wires on the serial 
side.  Why Icom and Kenwood couldn't use the same pinout on the 2.5mm 
plug I don't know.
