Furthermore, I am looking at the following Argent product:
GTRANS Garmin to NMEA Translator Cable (D-Sub Style)
[GTRANS-9F]
Will this be usable for a PC/Laptop as an input for NMEA stream? I am
guessing it might need a driver, unless it is serial interface?

The nuvi isn't directly NMEA compatible, but the GTRANS cable translates
the protocol. You can use the GTRANS-KW version (intended for the
D700/D710) on some DSTAR radios by switching two wires on the serial
side. Why Icom and Kenwood couldn't use the same pinout on the 2.5mm
plug I don't know.
