I find the box of old disposed Cell phone 12V adapters and chargers at
the local thrift stores to be a ready source of cheap power adapters.
Sometimes I leave the cig-plug intact.  On others I perform surgery
and replace it with the appropriate low voltage connector.  Sometimes
even power poles...   (Can I mention that word here?)

Just check the output voltage rating and you'll find adapters from 3 to 9 V..
