because the first time I tried it (about 3 years ago) it failed  
silently and caused me a great deal of heartburn.  I'm sure it has  
improved, else folks wouldn't be using it.  Fink is similarly simple  
to use.

I'm a unix hack by trade anyway, so installing from source doesn't  
trouble me (much).
