Hi...

For those outside the USA, there are alternatives.  Some of the far
eastern makers, do VFD and LCD text and graphic displays that have a
built in serial IO.  The protocol may be a bit screwy for some of the
more complex types, but all you need is a level translator, if that, and
some creativity in the software department.

Some of the Japanese hobbyists also do extremely good work with these,
and the more common parallel IO types. 

http://elm-chan.org/ is one such site, and
http://elm-chan.org/works/rsm/report_e.html is one very good example
using a LCD graphics display (not serial IO though).  Watch the video of
that project, very slick to say the least...

Don't be put off by the Manga cartoon graphics (some are truly stunning
though) search the electronic and software projects on there.   Someone
has way too much time on their hands!  Especially to create a Laser
graphics projection system.  APRS vector maps on the wall anyone?  (Just
to keep on topic!)
