This is the    "no-name generic cable with a DB9 encapsulated in 
transparent "Imac blue" plastic that is based on the FTDI chipset"   
that I referred to in my last post !   It set up with absolutely no 
hassle, worked on the first try and has been running ever since.     [ I 
bought it under another name at PC Club, a chain of computer stores in 
Southern California. ]
