You probably don't need a RELAY in there - if WIDE works, I'd stick with
that. As for rates, that's probably a question for the APRS SIG. I'll
probably be using relatively high rates (maybe 5 minutes or less) for a few
stations, because they'll be used for paraglider flying conditions and it's
important to have fast updates. That'll be very low power, with direct line
of sight to the nearest digi and maybe an IGate.
I don't think anyone would complain about a 5 minute rate on a lightly
loaded network, especially when you're the only weather station around.
Just keep the path down. We had one mountaintop station go on the air with
a RELAY,WIDE3-3 path a while back - managed to flood both the coast and
central valley regions at the same time.
