Effective immediately, RELAY is considered obsolete. Digis all over the
country are switching amazingly rapidly (considering the rancourous
debate of the last 6-9 months) to the "New Paradigm" standard and are
disabling both RELAY and dumb WIDE. The replacement for "RELAY" (i.e.
for home stations that want to be a first hop into the network) is now
"WIDE1-1".

The equivalent of "RELAY, WIDE " (two hops) or "RELAY, WIDE2-2" (three
hops) in the old order of things is now "WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1" (two
hops) or  "WIDE1-1, WIDE2-2" (three hops) .

A home station not capable of true WIDEn-N, that wants to be a digi,
sets his alias for digipeating to "WIDE1-1" which even a simple dumb TNC
digi can repeat. Then the second hop "WIDE2-2" can be handled by true
WIDEn-N digis that can properly decrement the SSID; i.e
WIDE2-2----->WIDE2-1------WIDE2*

However, if a true N-n WIDE happens to hear the first hop WIDE1-1
(instead of a home station), it will repeat it and handle it properly
with N-n type dupe supression.

Furthermore, if you are truely " frequently out where there are few or
no digis in range.", why would the path matter at all?
