In the future you could always use FreeBSD instead...  Latest ports tree 
has Xastir 1.3.2.. cd /usr/ports/comms/xastir; make; make install  ... 
Someone posted a ports change to upgrade it to 1.4.0, which should commit 
in the next few days...  I made the changes to my ports tree early, so I'm 
now at 1.4.0.  It requires a little more work than the point and click 
interface of installing most Linux distros, but it's not severely painful.

I don't use Linux here at all, partially because I'm an old Unix 
head.  However, my old Sparc Ultra 1 that was running Xastir ran Debian 
(out of force really) but the new Xastir machine runs FreeBSD 5 without any 
problems.

My Xastir server is headless, it uses VNC (www.realvnc.com) so I can 
connect to it remotely.  That's another phenomenon entirely, but it does 
eliminate the need to worry about video drivers and supported video cards 
for XWindows (one less thing to worry about0.  I can just open the VNC 
Viewer here and connect to the Xastir server via the network, and see the 
Xastir screen and everything from here.
