Wasn't my choice.  It had already been done using WxWidgets, and I
just came along and re-ported it to Linux, both the GUI and the text
version.

FWIW though I agree with you.  It'd make it simpler.  I do a bit of
Java here and there too.  Mostly standalone stuff, not web-based.
