[TangerineSDR] Field Day 2019 DigitialRF Data

Tom – thanks – the trip was truly outstanding.

On the GNURadio version, I guess I’m just lucky it worked for me. I see that the version I have is 3.7.11 (no fourth number, I guess this means 3.7.11.0).

On another topic:

  * After many hours, and also numerous discussions with the Digital RF team, I have concluded that (like you told me) it will be necessary to output raw binary files from the Tangerine, at least when using a computer with the capacity of the Odroid XU4 (converting them to Digital RF later). I have ordered an Odroid N2, and will see what results are with that. Reason is that I see that the processing requirements to output the Digital RF drive CPU utilization from 30% to 100% (when the only difference is the Digital RF output). Using raw binary output, I am able to simulate handling the data volume of 16 channels at 192 ksps. One remaining unknown is whether this will hold up when handling that much data coming from the RF stack (as opposed to just duplicating the output from a single feed).

Hi Bill - Welcome back, hope you had a great trip.

I have the correct data structure and file hierarchy, and don't get errors there.
The problem is that the Digital RF Source throws a python error on startup relating to it's
inability to iterate over the output port types.

Other folks have this problem as well, it was previously verified and logged into GitHub
back in December as open issue #3. Phil says that the maintainer has
repaired it, and the Digital RF code will be tagged with a new release number soon.
It appears that the error is dependent on the minor version number of Gnuradio 3.7.x.y

What error or problem do you get when you try to play back the field day data? I can get it to work (see screenshot).

Idea: The Digital RF block in GNURadio looks for a very specific directory structure and the properties file must be in the right place. In this case, I have the directory pointer in the GNUradio block set to /tmp . Under the /tmp directory is the directory /hdf5. Directory hdf5 contains the file drf_properties.h5, plus the folder of the time slice to be displayed, in my case 2019—06-22T17-00-00. Within that directory is the file of the data, in this case rf at 1561226332.000.h5<mailto:rf at 1561226332.000.h5> .

This structure is peculiar to Digital RF, and it also assumes that you have selected data for a particular center frequency (this is not automatic), and have entered the center frequency into any FFT display you want to use. You might be able to get it to work for you by replicating this file structure.

BTW – 6 meters is open to Europe at the moment

Thank you, Nathaniel.

I pulled down a small segment of one channel. However it will not playback in gnuradio.
I think the dataset is OK, it appears to be the gnuradio Digital RF Source module that's the problem.
The error that I am getting has already been submitted by other folks on github:
"py_io_signature' object does not support indexing #3"
back in December 2018, it appears not to have been addressed yet.

Hi guys!

Last week some people asked for copies of my Field Day DigitalRF data. I put it up on a SFTP server:

User/URL: hamsci at w2naf.d2g.com<mailto:hamsci at w2naf.d2g.com>
Password: hamsci

The connection is slow (raspberry pi connected to a residential xfinity connection), so try just taking what you need at first. I'm going to be working on making some summary plots of it over the next few days.
