[nos-bbs] JNOS Crashing Due To REWRITE File "Errors" - SOLVED?

I have JNOS2-MAN.doc (very dated)QUOTE:
The rewrite file is used to perform a one-to-one mapping between destination addresses as received by NOS and destination addresses as actually used by NOS. Each record within the rewrite file comprises a single line, containing either two or three entries separated by spaces. The first field is the template field; if a destination address matches the template, it is replaced by the second field. The third field, which is optional, is the single letter "r", which, if present, tells NOS to rescan the rewrite file, using the new destination address to attempt to match against the templates.END QUOTE
I have done some more testing. What I have since found was causing it is having the "r"escan in the following lines:
*.noam  $1.noam*.na    $1.noam*.usa   $1.usa.noam*.us    $1.usa.noam*.ca.usa $1.ca.usa.noam
I haven't narrowed it down further, but it could be any combination of these, or I could be way off base.
Not to figure out why JNOS isn't emptying the spool/mqueue directory.

for instance for messages received by nntp . Things like:  *!* $2$1  r   but for normal forwarding traffic received over
