I can understand how this would be useful for a human user, but I’ve written scripts that interact with a remote BBS and if the mode were to change it could cause the script to fail. For instance, the BBS might give prompts suitable for a human rather than the abbreviated prompts an automated remote would be looking for.
Once a remote requests a specific mode, it should remain in that mode unless commanded to change.

Subject [nos-bbs] JNOS Feature Request
I am not sure how hard this would be to implement. I have been
playing with DPBOX on old Linux and new NetBSD installs. One very
cool feature is that if it has you configured as a neighbor BBS it
will just give you the "chicken lips" prompt for a BBS, but the second
you initiate a user command, it will convert the session to a regular
user. This is a very cool feature.
-Any thoughts?
