Aha. So, that explains some entries.

Apparently the format is:

<callsign> <timestamp> M# [A] [X] [N] [P] [-n[<name> -h[<homebbs>] -e[<email>]] C{T|N|A}

And apparently, the following meanings apply (please correct if I’m wrong):

M# indicates the number (#) of –more-- lines

A is optional. If present, it indicates that the ‘current area’ prompt mode is on (mbox command XA toggle)

X is optional. If present, it indicates that the expert (short prompt) mode is on (mbox command X toggle)

N is optional. If present, it indicates that the ‘netrom id’ prompt mode is on (mbox command XN toggle)

P is optional. If present, it indicates that linemode-style prompting is on (mbox command XP toggle)

C{T|N|A} indicates connection by telnet, netrom or AX.25, respectively

-n -h -e appears if timestamp is not zero.

If that’s all true, then there are still some questions:

Timestamp:

The timestamp appears to be in the format of seconds since the epoch (date +%s), representing the last time the user logged in. But sometimes it is 0 (zero). So, what does an entry with a 0 timestamp represent?

P:

What is ‘LINEMODE-style’ prompting? I tried turning it on, but I don’t see a difference.

-n -h -e:

Sometimes (rarely) the letters are followed by data, such as “-nBob -hA0BCD -ebob at nowhere.com <mailto:-ebob at nowhere.com> ”. I have “mbox register off” in autoexec.nos. So, does this mean the user manually entered the “register” command after connecting?

The “-n -h -e” parameters do not appear if the timestamp is 0. Hopefully, the meaning of a 0 timestamp will make this self-evident. But if not, then what does this mean?

Thanks,

Michael

It stores your name and home bbs when it is entered and I think
it stores also other user data like 'more' or Y/N, number of lines displayed so
user data what has to be remembered.

Can someone explain the format of the spool/users.dat file?

Also, how is the information used?
