[nos-bbs] "new" bulletins

When a user switches to a new mailbox/area with "a <areaname>", they see "X
messages - Y new"

 

How is the number "Y" determined?

 

Please be specific.

 

And, if it has something to do with the spool/mail/<areaname>.usr file,
please explain how that works.

 

My reason for asking:  Some users are seeing "Y new" while others are seeing
"0 new", even when they access the mailbox for the first time after the
message has been added to the mailbox.  So I need to understand what's
supposed to occur in order to try to track down what's wrong.
