Ah, good point.  But we'd still need some sort of cron and scripting
functions to run a predetermined intervals and make take action
conditionally, right?

Actually just thought of something else on the drive home ...

If the TNC is NOT in kiss mode, chances are it will respond
to anything it gets from the application, right ? I suppose
that could be the foundation for partial hardening against
the TNC being kicked out of KISS mode. Not 100 percent, but
perhaps better than nothing.
