I guess you used outpost as standard user.

In the latest jnos version 2.0i + improvements in the source downloaded
by rsync

http://www.langelaar.net/ps/linux/rojects/jnos2/download

are define/undef to make it more compatible with outpost.

// Undefine MBX_AREA_PROMPT to suppress the default 'Area' indication upon
// BBS connection. Same as 'xm 0' command.
// This is done for Outpost compatibility.
// www.outpostpm.org
// Note: Leave it defined for default JNOS2.0h behavior.
// K6FSH  2010-07-07
// #undef MBX_AREA_PROMPT
#define MBX_AREA_PROMPT

// Undefine MBX_MORE_PROMPT to suppress the default -more- prompt during
// BBS interaction. This is done for Outpost compatibility.
// www.outpostpm.org
// Note: Leave it defined for default JNOS2.0h behavior.
// K6FSH  2010-07-07
// #undef MBX_MORE_PROMPT
#define MBX_MORE_PROMPT

I don't know or your problem has anything to do with that.
