[nos-bbs] FW: smtp gateway options

Hi Bob,
I realize that it's possible to configure JNOS to use domain.txt as a cache
for DNS. But we prefer to keep domain.txt static, like a regular linux
/etc/host file so it doesn't end up being a mess to read. That way JNOS
behaves like if you have /etc/nsswitch.conf configured with "files dns".
I don't know how you conclude that the nonlocal proposal isn't necessary.
Perhaps it's not in your environment. That's o.k. But I have already
described one actual real-world example. There are probably others. Simply
having more than one JNOS system connected over the air means you DON'T want
to send everything over the air to the gateway, and then back again over the
air to the destination, when it could have gone direct. Hope that
clarifies.

Michael,
I'm only for two options.
old behaviour
new behaviour - all messages are forwarded to smtp gateway.
This is the same default behaviour in linux/unix MTA's like postfix, exim,
etc. when a mail relay is setup in the config of these servers.
You three options makes it too complex and is also unnecessary in practice.
(in my opinion)
With other words, "smtp gateway nonlocal" of your proposal isn't necessary.
domain.txt and dns look up go hand in hand. The domain text is the cache for
the dns.
Not in the domain.txt or an expired entry automatically triggers a domain
lookup.
