[nos-bbs] Toss-up on configuring HF 300B packet TNC

I have experimented just enough myself to need another experienced
perspective from this community.
The issue is one of choice for HF packet configurations.

Here are the variables:
 1) TNC mfg and model.
 2) TNC setting choice.
 3) Radio dial setting.

TNCs come with:
 1) 300B tone set 1600-1800 default (200hz bandwidth)
 2) 300B tone set 2125-2295 default (170hz bandwidth)
 3) ? tone set non-adjustable and specified as not suitable for 300B
(but usable IF YOU WANT)
 4) 300B tone set 2200-2400 config per recommendation of other user
(200hz bandwidth)

Radios tune by formula LSB: dial = emission signal centerline + tone set
centerline.

Now I have experienced the above to be true - perhaps my language
strikes you as unusual though...
How I first noticed this is in comparing approaches to setting up a HF
packet station.
The guys using 1600-1800 tune 600hz lower than guys using 2200-2400 tone
sets.
Then I noticed some TNC's did not support 300B nicely by choice of the
mfg.

So my toss-up question is this:
Why have multiple sets of tone sets developed over the years - and which
is a favored set (why?)?
AND - if the TNC will not support the 200hz tone set split - do I
document that model as "DON'T USE" in my wiki?

THANKS in advance if you can add to this lack of understanding on my
part.
