I have experimented just enough myself to need another experienced perspective from this community.<BR>
The issue is one of choice for HF packet configurations.<BR>
<BR>
Here are the variables:<BR>
1) TNC mfg and model.<BR>
2) TNC setting choice.<BR>
3) Radio dial setting.<BR>
<BR>
TNCs come with:<BR>
1) 300B tone set 1600-1800 default (200hz bandwidth)<BR>
2) 300B tone set 2125-2295 default (170hz bandwidth)<BR>
3) ? tone set non-adjustable and specified as not suitable for 300B (but usable IF YOU WANT)<BR>
4) 300B tone set 2200-2400 config per recommendation of other user (200hz bandwidth)<BR>

Radios tune by formula LSB: dial = emission signal centerline + tone set centerline.<BR>
<BR>
Now I have experienced the above to be true - perhaps my language strikes you as unusual though...<BR>
How I first noticed this is in comparing approaches to setting up a HF packet station.<BR>
The guys using 1600-1800 tune 600hz lower than guys using 2200-2400 tone sets.<BR>
Then I noticed some TNC's did not support 300B nicely by choice of the mfg.<BR>

So my toss-up question is this:<BR>
Why have multiple sets of tone sets developed over the years - and which is a favored set (why?)?<BR>
AND - if the TNC will not support the 200hz tone set split - do I document that model as "DON'T USE" in my wiki?<BR>
