It's been several years since I have run VMware (and it was the Linux  
version), but I recall that it emulated a NIC, sharing the connection  
with the physical NIC.  Looking at the web site it appears you can  
also set it up for a bridged connection with a separate IP.  I think  
the Workstation version would be the one to use, but it's pricey  
($189 for the download version).  The performance is quite a bit  
slower than running Linux natively.  I would prefer an old 486  or  
Pentium 1 running Linux, but it should work.

There are quite a few other emulators (some are free) around.   
Perhaps Bochs would even work.
