Let the RPi do it.

Install a usb radio interface (there are multiple ones available), design your 
own (thats what I did) or usa a UDRC (http://nwdigitalradio.com/wp-content/
uploads/2012/04/UDRC-IIDS.pdf)

Then configure direwolf as the TNC, use it's kiss interface for whatever 
programs you need for mailbox, command mode etc.

You couldn't pay me to use a kantronics or timewave tnc anymore.
