Most rental contracts state that you have to get preauthorization from
the rental car company first before bringing it in for service.  In some
cases the company would rather trade out the vehicle for another so they
can bring it to a repair center of their choice.

If you do not get preauthorization it is entirely possible to be liable
for any costs associated.  You just got lucky that you weren't charged
for the service.
