On a loosely related note...
Alas, the "state of the art" in call sign assignments has left AX.25 in the dust.
If you happen to have a call sign that does not fit the AX.25 header, consider placing your Grid6 in the call sign field and your full call sign (WB4APR/VE3) in the payload (to assure reporting compliance).
Where there are more than one stations in the same Grid6, implement Grid6-## SSID to differentiate. There are still limits, but they are unlikely to come into play.
If they do, then use Grid4## and increment ##+1 to create a unique "callsign" field entry.
Asking from ignorance: Is there a protocol for placing the call sign in the payload so that it can be parsed and displayed on web maps (instead of the AX.25 "call sign" value)?
