Thats why i said BLE.  BLE has a mode that works for serial data transfer,
and Apple could not break it and still be BLE standard compliant.  SPP
support is optional, hence the lack of SPP support in iOS.

There are various BLE devices and tutorials for connecting them to
iThings.  They require a (US$100) Apple Developer license in order to load
the app onto the iThing.

Still leaves the offline maps issue, though.
