I have reached out to W0JW directly and hopefully he will be able to resolve the issue without too much pain (turn off Mic-E translation, again, and handle packets transparently, probably by switching to KISS mode on the TNC if the software can handle it).  Good things to remember for anyone running any type of IGate.
