Which, sorry to say, won't work either because of little things like
range, power and use case..

We can buy an APRS data radio with GPS, TNC and 1 watt today for a bit
over $100.  Less $ yet for a 9600+ UHF radio.   Opportunities abound
with our ham spectrum.
