It is absolutely needed.  We've had payloads landing in the
Appalachian foothills in AL/GA/TN that would have been much more
difficult to locate without a digipeat.

There's your incorrect assumption - that the only important thing is
getting to the internet.  We could track just fine if there were no
igates or APRS-IS.  -IS is very nice to have, but it's not the goal.
