The FTDI chipset also works very well on Mac OS X. The device special
file name contains the device's unique serial number, so it doesn't
matter where you plug it in to the USB tree.
Ironically the linux driver is a bit more trouble; by default, devices
are labelled in enumeration order (/dev/ttyUSBn). A bit of work with
udev rules can improve on the default behavior by creating unique
device special file names.
