Here is a quick chart showing the relative sensitivity of various packet
decoding engines.  There are several disclaimers on the site, but I think
the numbers comparing hardware decode to software decode are in the right
ballpark:

(scroll about one page down).

To winnow out direct packets, just look for "*" in the list of
digipeaters.  If you see one, you know it was touched by a digi.
