But there is an optimum distance.  In such a variable system, there is still
an average, and a median and a mean.  Even though the variability is GREAT,
there is still a "best all around" average distance that would in the long
term work "best" most of the time.

Everyone knows what 80 meters can typically do.  Everyone knows what 20m can
typically do.  Some know pretty well what 30m can do.  It would be nice to
look at that knowledge.
