I would suggest making that something that can be toggled off, if not needed.  Such as with a TNC-X or similar KISS only TNC.

Again, an option that should have the ability to be toggled off or on depending on the TNC model being used.

With so many KISS only TNC's that start up in KISS and never leave that mode (TNC-X, OpenTracker 1+, TinyTrak4, ect.), it really simplifies the whole setup.  No more guessing why the hell you just stopped getting data, when the TNC decided to just drop out of KISS mode for no reason (KPC-3, PacComms, AEAs, ect.).
