As long as GPS modules output at least TTL level serial communications 
(UART) it won't be a problem interfacing them to legacy equipment. 
Already though at least some of them are adding or switching to other 
serial protocols (I think SPI and TWI) which are often supported in 
hardware by microcontrollers like AVRs and PICs.

The 2.5 mini jack on the D72 is not a mirror of the USB serial port. It 
outputs NMEA from the GPS or APRS waypoint data. It can not be used to 
talk to the TNC. I think that qualifies as limited.
