I don't believe that was the case, but that was a long time ago.  I believe the 1st car was either a Plymouth Fury I or a Ford Pinto Station Wagon (probably the latter).  The 2nd car was a Plymouth Fury III.  These cars were stock.

What I thought I figured out a few years later was that there must have been a loose ground (From the engine to the chassis?  Chassis to battery?), so the starter current tried to return via a different path.  Could there have been potential between the antenna ground and the metal dash?  That would have caused current to flow through the radio's ground.
