Another option is to use the mike / earphone jack. PocketDigi does this 
with Windows Mobile. You can connect to a xcvr to do sound card digital 
modes.

I think timing would be a challenge with the magnetometer. My game 
Galactic Patrol: Zap GPS uses the compass and gravity sensors. You 
position the phone to shoot down GPS satellites. The sensors don't 
respond all that quickly on my G1 phone and the response is pretty 
sloppy and dependent on what else is running on the phone. They are 
useful for their purpose but transferring signals isn't one of those 
purposes.
