This isn't a big deal IMO, partly because there is no explicit
standard regarding the ASCII representation of the AX.25 packet, and
partly because there isn't really any ambiguity. (As a programmer I'd
rather see them all marked, as that's the easiest to code, and also
the correct representation...)
Nodes that modify the payload are broken. Period. Fix the node,
replace the node, ignore the data from the node, whatever - but don't
bastardize the standard to work around one broken implementation.
The suggestion was to have Yaesu change their implementation, which
meets the standard, _and_ have all current Yaesu owners upgrade their
firmware, just because one obsolete piece of software has a bug.
That's insane no matter how many people are using the obsolete
software.
